Chapter 6: Who Knows Which Pups
Ironwood's provisions hall holds the weekly allocation meeting every Friday at ten.
I had run it for six years, from the second chair on the left.
On Friday I walked in through the front doors with the three widows behind me, and Cade a pace behind them.
Hanna had Mabel at the ranch. I had fed her twice before dawn and told her I'd be back by noon.
Eighty people were in the hall.
Greta sat at the head of the long table in my cloak, with a ledger open in front of her and the baby in a basket at her feet.
Bram's uncle sat at her right with his glass of water.
Bram was at the end of the table. He looked at the door, and then at the wood grain.
The room went quiet in a long ripple from the doors to the head.
"This is a closed session," Greta said. She had her soft voice on. "Willa, you can't be here."
"I'm here as a witness for three families whose oil and flour were stopped at dawn on Wednesday," I said. "Wind Valley's Alpha is here as the neighbouring witness. If a closed session can't bear a witness, the elders can say so."
Nobody spoke.
An old elder at the far end of the table cleared his throat. "Let her say it," he said.
Greta's smile stayed where it was.
"The list was reviewed," she said. "The widows' allocations were above the pack's budget."
"By how much?" I asked.
"Considerably."
"Which line?"
She looked at the ledger.
"The cabin heating oil. Fourteen hundred gallons a winter, delivered in two drops, at a price Ironwood has paid the same supplier since before the Alpha was Alpha," I said. "The flour is from the north mill, forty sacks a month. It costs less than the glass your Alpha's uncle is drinking from."
