Chapter 7: The Cloak Lining

The boy's lips had gone blue.

I dropped to my knees on the hall floor and turned his head to the side.

"Tell me what he touched," I said to the mother.

"Nothing! He ran to see the baby, and then he fell."

"Cade," I said. "The healer's kit. The red tin on the wall by the door."

He was already gone.

I put two fingers inside the boy's collar. His skin was hot and swelling at the throat.

"Look at me," I said, and I made my voice flat and quiet the way Hanna taught me. "Look at my face. You're going to breathe in a little bit, little bit more."

His eyes found mine.

Cade slammed the tin down beside me, and I knew exactly where everything was.

Antihistamine drops under the tongue. Charcoal paste on the lip. The small blue bottle that opens a throat if it's opened in time.

I waited, my fingers pressed to the pulse in his neck.

The boy's chest hitched, and then it dragged in a breath.

Eighty people let out a sound together.

His mother put her forehead against his and cried.

"He's all right," I said. "Keep him sitting up. Don't let him sleep for an hour."

I sat back on my heels, and my hands were shaking.

Then I looked at his hands.

The palms were red and blistered in a line, the width of a hem.

"He ran to the baby," I said. "Who did he grab?"

"The cloak," the mother said. "Greta's cloak. She bent down to him."
