Chapter 17: Ivey's Choice
I sat down on the top step of the loft stairs with the lawsuit in my lap.
"Three million dollars," I said. "I've got eleven hundred in the business account."
Thatcher came up two steps and sat below me.
"She doesn't want the money," he said. "She wants the can."
"She's not getting the can."
"I know."
He leaned his head back against my knees.
"She's scared," he said.
"She's suing me for three million dollars."
"That's what she does when she's scared. She did it to Dad's memory. She did it to me." He shut his eyes. "Now she's doing it to you."
I put my hand in his hair.
"Then she's very scared," I said.
Monday, the lawyer Thatcher found was an old man with an office over a bakery on Liberty Street.
He read the suit at his desk with powdered sugar on his tie, and laughed out loud twice.
"Keep the can somewhere she can't reach it," he said. "And don't say another word in public until you've got more than a can."
I took the coffee can to my aunt's house that afternoon.
She put it in her deep freezer, under six bags of field peas and a pound cake from 2019.
