Chapter 12: Press Room

By ten o'clock the arena's media room held forty reporters and a table with two microphones.

I sat at it in a clean sweater, with Theo on my right and his coach on his other side.

My mother had come up from Seattle on the first bus, and she sat in the second row in her black coat with her whistle in her fist.

Under the table, Theo's knee was against mine.

He had not moved it since we sat down.

"Thank you for coming," said the federation's media officer. "Lena and Theo will take a few questions about last night's result and about the statement released this morning."

A man in the front row stood up before she had finished.

"Miss Hargrove. Wyatt Kessler says you defected and took your old team's choreography. Did you?"

I had practiced my answer in the shower.

"No," I said.

"The credits on your short program list your name, and his."

"The choreography credits list my name because I made the program. He skated it, and I never signed anything away." I leaned a little toward the microphone. "If the federation wants to see my notebooks, I'll bring them."

"Are you accusing a two-time national champion of lying?"

"I'm answering your question."

A woman near the back raised a hand.

"Miss Hargrove, there's a report from Seattle that you hid a medical issue from the federation for five years. Something about a concussion."
