Chapter 6: Eight Hundred Wolves

I stood up when the roast was cleared and the first toast had been made.

The chair scraped on the boards. A few heads turned.

"Clara," Rhett said under his breath. "Sit down."

"No."

I walked to the edge of the dais where every table could see me.

My knees were not steady, but my voice was.

"Cedar Hollow, I need a moment of your time."

The noise of the hall thinned. Eight hundred wolves turned their faces to me.

"For six years," I said, "I have kept flowers out of my house, because my mate's wolf cannot bear their scent."

People nodded. Everybody knew the story.

"I dug up my garden for him. I gave away my herbs, and I stopped making the remedies this pack used to ask me for."

A murmur ran through the elders.

"Tonight, there are roses in this hall."

I turned my head toward the woman in green.

"They are on Sabine Teller, and they were on my husband last Tuesday and last Thursday."

The hall went silent.

Sabine did not move. She tilted her head, and she smiled at me with her whole warm face.

"Luna," she said gently. "I'm a florist. Roses are on everything I own."

"They were on his collar," I said.

"Clara." Rhett's voice cut across the dais. He was on his feet, his jaw tight. "You're unwell. My mother warned me you've been under strain. Let's go home."

"I'm not unwell."

"You are making a scene in front of the Redfern delegation."

"Good," I said. "They can watch."

Maureen rose beside him, pearls trembling.
