Chapter 26: The Cottage

I didn't answer him on the steps.

I didn't answer him in the car, or at the hotel, or on the plane the next morning.

He didn't ask again.

He sat beside me at thirty thousand feet with the crystal award in his lap, because it was too heavy for my bag.

Libby slept against the window with her mouth open.

When we landed in Portland, I said, "Show me."

The cottage sat at the end of the point road, past the rocks, maybe four hundred yards from my porch.

It was small and white with a green door that had peeled down to the wood.

There was a dead rosebush by the steps and a lobster trap someone had left on the lawn.

"When?" I said.

"The week after the shower." He turned the key in his hand. "The owner wanted to sell before winter. I paid too much."

"You bought a house without asking me."

"I bought a house without telling you." He looked at the green door. "I didn't move in. I've been waiting to ask."

"Since October."

"Since October."

I walked up the steps and looked through the front window.

One room, a woodstove, a kitchen the size of a closet.

From the back window, you could see the light in my nursery.
