Chapter 5: The Microphone

At two o'clock, Rafe Tolland sat on a stool on the stage and asked the room for questions.

A volunteer in a paper boat shirt carried a microphone down the center aisle.

Hands went up all over the ballroom.

I raised mine.

The volunteer passed me the microphone.

Three hundred people turned their heads to look.

Rafe shaded his eyes against the stage lights. He found me in the middle of the room.

"Casey," he said. "The one who walked out of a fight."

A few people laughed.

"Hi," I said. "This is my question. It's not about noodles."

"Good," Rafe said. "I'm tired of noodles."

More laughter, warm and easy.

I held the microphone with both hands and kept my eyes on him.

"Last Saturday I stood up at my own engagement party to give a toast. While I was talking, my fiancé's text came through. He meant to send it to a private chat. He sent it to me."

The laughter stopped.

"It said, 'She said yes in front of everyone. Tell her to quit making faces at me. The trip Thursday is still on. Her fan weekend covers us.'"

Someone in the front gasped.

"I read that out loud to sixty people," I said. "Then I took off my ring."

"Jesus," a man behind me whispered.

"The fan weekend is this one. This meetup. My fiancé and my best friend used your tour as their cover to be together."

I turned and pointed down the aisle.

"They're sitting in row three."

Three hundred heads swung around.

Dillon had gone white. Lydia sat with her mouth open.

For a moment nobody moved.

Then Lydia stood up, one hand pressed to her heart.
