Chapter 22: Put My Wife On
Keeley's POV
"Tell him I'll take his call at my grandmother's house," I said to the deputy. "On the landline. Tomorrow evening."
"Ma'am, the call is tonight."
"Then he can wait."
He looked at me for a second and then wrote it down.
On Monday, I sat in the glass conference room on the ninth floor with a cup of coffee I actually drank.
The lawyer slid a folder across the table.
"A judge froze every account the firm owns at eight this morning," she said.
"Your mother's money was the first thing the bank could trace. It's yours again, in full."
She laid a cashier's check on top.
Sixty-two thousand dollars, made out to Keeley Engberg, my own name with no one's added to it.
My mother had worked at a school cafeteria for twenty-two years.
I had to look at the wall for a minute.
"And the seventy-four hundred," the lawyer said. "The dealership wire. It's in your new account. The one only you have a card for."
"What about Alana?"
"The prosecutor dropped the complaint against her on Sunday, after he read the signature report."
She took her glasses off.
"She's a witness now. She's lost her job, but not her name."
"And the eleven?"
"They'll be paid out of what we can recover, in order, with the oldest loans first. It won't be tomorrow." She almost smiled. "But the woman in the green coat sent me a casserole."
At four I drove back to Indian Lake in Nolan's truck, with the check folded into the glove box.
I turned up the lane.
