Chapter 15: The Lake House
Weston's father crossed the marble to us with his coat over his arm.
Claudia stood at the coat check behind him, rigid, and she did not turn around.
"Miss Pallotta," he said.
He did not look at the lace on the floor behind me.
"I owe you a good deal more than an apology. I have only the apology tonight."
"Thank you," I said, and my voice was surprisingly steady.
"My son is a fool." He glanced at Massimo, then back to me.
"I would like to meet your father's daughter properly someday, in daylight."
"I'd like that."
He bowed his head an inch and walked away.
Massimo had the garment bag in one hand and the car keys in the other.
"Michigan," he said in my ear.
"What?"
"The cabin. Ninety minutes. The captains can hold the city tonight."
By midnight we were in Harbor Country, in the snow, and I had stopped caring about anything but his hands.
The cabin sat on a bluff above the lake.
It was log and glass, with a stone chimney and a big bed in a loft.
A deep rug lay in front of a fireplace that took up half the room.
He lit the fire while I stood in the doorway in my black gown, shaking snow out of my hair.
Then he stood up and looked at me across the room.
"Take it off."
I reached behind me.
I found the little hook at the nape of my neck and the long zipper.
The silk fell off my shoulders and pooled around my feet.
I stepped out of it.
I wore nothing else.
The firelight ran over me.
"Come here."
I walked to the rug.
He sat on the sofa, still in his dinner jacket, and I stood in front of him, bare and glowing.
He looked for a long time.
"You were incredible tonight," he said.
"You were there."
