Chapter 19: The Chair
Nine men stood in my father's study, and none of them sat.
They had arranged themselves in a half circle in front of the desk.
The lamp was lit.
The high-backed chair stood behind the desk, empty, and the wolf's-head ring was heavy on my finger.
I walked to the middle of the rug.
"Tell me what's wanted," I said.
The eldest stepped forward.
He was sixty, with a broad flat face and the biggest hands I had ever seen.
I had once sat on his shoulders at a christening.
"We want a head," he said.
"We have had a regent, and he has been a good one. But the Dunleavys count the days, and so do our men. We want a Pallotta in that chair, and we want to hear her say it."
"I am a Pallotta."
"Say the rest."
