Chapter 23: Home
The dress came back to me on the twenty-third of December, in a white box tied with string.
The old tailor from Taylor Street carried it up the stairs himself.
He was eighty, with a tape measure around his neck and a pin cushion strapped to his wrist.
He had made my mother's alterations in 1996.
"Stand on the stool," he said.
I stood in my slip in the middle of my parents' bedroom.
He lifted the ivory silk out of the tissue.
Penelope had worn it for a night and a morning.
The tailor had found a small tear at the zipper and a stain at the hem.
He had mended the one and lifted the other.
I could see where he had worked, and I loved him for it.
"She was thinner than you in the shoulders," he said around his pins.
"I let out the seams a quarter inch.
Nobody will see it.
Your mother will know, wherever she is."
I closed my eyes while the silk slid down over my arms.
