Chapter 27: After the Ballroom

The ballroom doors swung shut behind him.

For a second nobody in the room made a sound.

Then the man in the bow tie at table one stood up.

He looked at me on the stage, still holding nothing, because Byron had taken the microphone with him.

He started to clap.

Slowly, by himself, and then not by himself.

I didn't wait for the rest of them.

I came down the steps, and Clark was at the bottom with his hand out.

I took it.

Jeanine took my other arm, and we walked out through three hundred people in our good clothes, and nobody stopped us.

Alexis was gone from the doors.

She'd had an hour, and she'd used it.

Byron spent Saturday night in a cell.

On Monday he stood in front of a judge in yesterday's tuxedo shirt.

My attorney was in the back row.

She called me from the courthouse steps.

"Bail is set and he'll post it by lunch," she said. "He's ordered to have no contact with you. None. Not a call, not a card, not a man with a message."
