Chapter 6: The Lobby

I didn't give her the blank face.

There was no point anymore.

"Put it down," I said.

Alexis flipped a page with one long pink nail.

"'Day thirty-one. B said the waffles were my idea. They were his.'" She looked up. "Wow. Riveting."

"Put it down, Alexis."

Her eyebrows went up.

"Oh, you know my name now? That's new." She flipped further. "'Clark has the thing. Trust him.' What thing, Patient L? Is the carpenter giving you a thing?"

I came around the counter.

She stepped back, tucked the book under her arm, and picked up her purse.

"I'm late for work," she said. "Byron's going to love this. Bedtime reading."

She was out the front door before I reached her.

Davey was crying in his high chair with oatmeal on his face.

I couldn't leave him.

I heard the elevator ding and close.

I got Davey into the stroller with oatmeal still on him and jabbed the button twelve times.

When the doors finally opened on the lobby, Alexis was standing at the doorman's desk.

She was waiting for her car, scrolling her phone.

The blue book was on the marble counter next to her elbow.

It was seven-forty in the morning, and the lobby was full.

A man in running shorts was getting his mail.

An older couple stood by the door with a little white dog in a sweater.

A delivery guy was wheeling in boxes.

The doorman looked up and smiled at me the way he always did.

"Morning, Mrs. Aldane. Haven't seen you down this early."

I pushed the stroller across the marble.

I put my hand flat on the blue book and slid it off the counter.
