Chapter 24: The Tile Floor
Siobhan's POV
Fintan had his face against the window of the departures hall at Logan before we had finished checking the bags.
It was the Tuesday of Christmas week, and the terminal was full of people in good coats carrying wrapped boxes.
Beyond the glass, a big white plane was backing away from a gate.
A man in an orange vest walked in front of it, waving two lit wands.
"That one's going," Fintan said.
"That's somebody's plane," I said.
"Is it ours?"
"Ours is the one after. Over there."
"It's enormous." He had his lip tucked in so hard it had disappeared. "How does it stay up?"
"It goes very fast," Cormac said, behind him.
He held the passports in one hand and the boarding passes in the other.
He looked like a man who had read the instructions three times and still did not trust them.
"That's not an answer," said Fintan.
"It's the one I've got," said Cormac.
"Biscuit doesn't like fast."
"Biscuit's going to sit on your knee and hold on," I said. "When we're up, he can look out of the window."
"Can he have a seat belt?"
"He can share yours."
Fintan accepted this and went back to the glass.
I looked at the two of them standing side by side, a small boy in a blue puffer jacket and a big man in a dark coat.
Both had their hands pressed flat against the cold pane, and both stood with their weight on one hip.
Neither of them knew it.
Cormac had kept a notebook all autumn, in a cramped square hand.
I had read it once, over his shoulder, without telling him.
Does not like the hand dryer in the toilets.
Says the stairs are lava on Saturdays.
Called me Cormac today and then said, "Is that okay?" I said it was fine.
I had gone into the next room after that line and sat on the floor for a while.
"We've got an hour," Cormac said now. "I'll take him to look at the real ones."
"Go," I said.
"You're all right?"
"I'm fine."
"I know you are." I saw him decide to say the rest. "I mean you're allowed not to be. If you'd like to stay, I'll understand."
