Chapter 15: Rocco's POV: She Never Asked
Rocco's POV
My uncle didn't come.
We sat in a van on Dock Street until two in the morning, four of my drivers and Gemma's two captains, with Sabrina's wire running into a recorder on my knee.
Sabrina walked into the cold storage alone at midnight.
She stood in the loading bay under a single bulb for two hours and said, to nobody, "Zio? It's me. I brought it."
Nobody answered her.
At ten to two a boy on a scooter rode up and handed her an envelope, and rode away.
She read it, and her shoulders dropped.
She told the wire what it said, because she was afraid of me.
My uncle had changed his mind.
Tomorrow, then.
He knew, or he guessed, and I couldn't tell which was worse.
I sent Sabrina to my mother's house with two men on the door and told them to watch her hands.
Then I sat in the van with my forearms burning under the gauze, and Gemma opened the door and said, "Get out."
"I'm all right."
"The hospital told you to change those dressings every six hours. It's been nine. Get out."
I got out.
I would have done a good deal worse for her than that, but she did not know it yet.
Her flat smelled of lemon and old paper.
She sat me on a kitchen chair under the one lamp, and she took scissors and a roll of gauze from a drawer where she had already put them.
She had thought of this before I did.
She sat down in front of me with my left arm across her knees and began to unwind the dressing.
