Chapter 18: Hot Water
We had walked out of St. Colman's past every eye in the parish, and he had driven us to Cumberland Street without a word.
I did not wait for the water to run warm.
I pulled him into my mother's bathroom by his belt and shut the door.
The tile was pink, the stall was narrow, and the mirror over the pedestal sink fogged before I had my dress off.
"Aisling," he said.
"Get in," I said.
I turned the tap and stepped under the cold spray with a gasp, and dragged him in after me in his shirt.
The water soaked his white collar and ran down the bruise on his throat.
It came hot a moment later, and steam rolled up around us.
"You stood up in front of the whole parish," I said.
"I did," he said.
"You said it in front of everyone I've ever sung to."
"I said it for you."
"I know you did," I said.
"Take your shirt off."
He tore it open, and the buttons rattled on the tile.
He dropped it on the floor of the stall in a sodden heap.
His chest shone wet in the light, with the gold medal on its chain and the pale scar across his ribs.
I put my palms flat on him and slid them up his wet skin to his shoulders.
He shuddered under my hands.
"You've nothing left to give them," I said.
"No chair and no ring."
"I've nothing," said Cathal.
"Nothing to take from me but what I give you," I said, and I kissed him.
It was open and furious, and the water ran into our mouths.
He backed me against the pink tile, and it was cold behind my shoulders and he was hot in front.
His hands went to my breasts, and he rolled my nipples under the spray with his thumbs until I whimpered into his mouth.
