Chapter 21: The Gala
The ballroom of the Westin held four hundred people and a string quartet, and every one of them was looking at Delmar Trammell.
Jud sat at the head table with his hands folded in his lap.
He wore a black tuxedo and a plain white shirt, and he had not touched the halibut.
To his right sat Yancey in a rented tux that didn't fit across the shoulders, with a napkin in his lap and his knee jammed hard against Jud's under the tablecloth.
To his left sat Ira, with his cane hooked on the chair.
At the center of the table, under a banner that said Forty Years of Trammell Marine, Delmar rose to speak.
He tapped the microphone.
The room hushed.
"Friends," he said warmly. "Colleagues. Family."
He looked down the table, and his eyes passed over Yancey without a flicker, and rested on Jud.
"Forty years ago I bought a single tug and a lease on a dock in Baytown. Tonight there are two hundred vessels on this coast with the name Trammell on the bow."
Applause rolled over the room.
Jud watched his father's hands.
They rested on the lectern, easy and steady, and not a muscle moved in the smooth tanned face.
It was a masterly performance.
He thought, very clearly, that he had never once seen a man lie so well, and that he had learned it at this man's knee.
