Chapter 22: What Bodie Heard
"Bodie, sweetheart," Delaney said. "Come here to me."
Bodie didn't look at her.
He walked across the granite in his bare feet, straight to me, and took hold of my jacket.
Then he turned around and faced the ring.
"The heir is six," the elder said. "Children don't speak on the stone."
"He's the heir," Nash said.
It was the first thing he'd said since he came up out of the trees.
"He speaks on the stone if he wants to."
The elder's mouth went thin.
Bodie looked up at me.
"You can," I said. "Say it like you said it in the diner."
He took a breath.
"I heard Delaney in the hall," he said. His voice was small, but the whole valley was so quiet it carried. "At night, when I was supposed to be asleep."
"She told Grandpa she did it."
Delaney laughed. It came out wrong.
"And Grandpa said, what about the other ones. And she said, the other ones talked too much."
