Chapter 14: The Price of Her Name

Kira Tennant sat in her car in the County General lot with the settlement paper open on the steering wheel.

Her name was blacked out on every page.

She had read it so many times that she knew where the creases were.

Her phone buzzed.

It was a nurse from the cardiac ward, and the message said: *They took Cal. Come.*

She got to the ward in six minutes.

Joan Bracken was standing in the middle of the corridor in her hospital gown, one hand on the IV pole, and two nurses were trying to steer her back to bed.

"There she is," Joan said. "Let go of me, I'm talking to her."

Kira stopped an arm's length away.

She had expected anger.

Joan's eyes were red, but they were fierce.

"He knows," Joan said. "And he's furious, and he's right to be, and they cuffed him in front of me anyway."

"Mrs. Bracken, I'm so sorry."

"Don't be sorry. Be useful." Joan pointed a thin finger. "You walked into that boy's life with a lie. Now you walk into a courtroom with the truth. Go."

"If I say it, I lose everything the settlement protects."

"What did it protect? Not him. Not me." Joan let the nurses take her arm. "I don't need the good girl who reads on Sundays, Kira. I need the one who stood in the road."

Kira nodded.

She did not trust her voice.

Haverford & Pell took up four floors of a glass tower on Public Square.

She had never been inside.

She had only ever seen it printed at the top of the paper that bought her mouth.

The receptionist looked at her cane and her wet coat and began to say that she needed an appointment.

"Tell Gerald Ridgway that the pedestrian is here," Kira said.

The receptionist went as pale as the marble floor.

Within a minute a door opened at the end of the hall, and the lawyer from the gala stepped out, smiling.
