Chapter 22: The Corridor Tape

Kira Tennant found Gerald Ridgway where she had hoped he would be.

He was in the lobby of his own tower at seven in the morning, in yesterday's overcoat, with two cardboard boxes at his feet.

The doormen stood a careful distance away.

Gerald's lawyers had sued her first.

It was waiting on her doormat when she got home from the ballroom, a new filing in the same thick envelope, with the figure typed in bold: *Four hundred and ten thousand dollars with penalties and costs.*

Cal had wanted to come with her.

She had told him to stay with his mother and let her do this one on her own.

"It's mine," she had said. "I signed it."

He had kissed her on the forehead and handed her the cane he had mended himself.

Now she crossed the marble toward Gerald with it ticking on every tile.

He looked up and almost smiled.

"Ms. Tennant. Come to gloat?"

"I've come to give you something back."

"My lawyers have it in hand."

"This isn't from your lawyers."

She took her phone out of her coat pocket and held it up.

The screen showed a still of a hospital corridor in grainy gray.

A number in the corner read *03/14, 07:41*.

"I work at County General," she said. "Every corridor camera in the trauma wing is kept for ten years if a lawyer ever asks for it. Yours did."

Gerald's face had not changed.

"I asked the records office on Tuesday afternoon, after you told me you'd been sitting at my bed the first hour."

She pressed play.

A man in a navy overcoat walked into the frame with a paper cup of coffee.
