Chapter 28: The Fine Print

"I'd like to sleep alone tonight," James said at breakfast.

Grant put down his fork.

Harry's cup stopped halfway to his mouth.

Felix, who had been buttering a roll, went on buttering it for a few seconds before he looked up.

"Alone," Grant said.

"In my own bed."

"This is the royal bedchamber. The bed is the size of a barn."

"Then there's plenty of room for one man."

"You have never once complained about the room," Harry said.

"I'm complaining now. Politely."

Nobody spoke.

Grant folded his napkin into a precise square, laid it on the table, and stood.

"I will be in my quarters," he said. "If you reconsider, you may send word at any hour."

"Grant..."

"I have a timetable."

He left, with his back very straight.

Harry stayed a moment longer.

"You are lying," he said. "You are very bad at it."

"I'm tired."

"You are many things. Tired is not the one that makes you look at the floor."

He set his cup down without a sound, and went out after Grant.

That left Felix.

Felix finished buttering the roll, set it carefully on James's plate, and sat back.

"Go on," he said.

"I just want a night."

"Nope. Say the real one."

"There isn't a real one."

"James. I've known you for a year and a half, if you count the time you didn't write me."

"I didn't."

"Right. That one's on me, I know. Say the real one."

James stared at the roll.

It was very well buttered.

"The SYSTEM," he said at last, "told me the Bloodline of Desire draws partners toward its bearer."

Felix's eyebrows went up.

"It says that?"

"It said it on the night of the sealing. In a window."

"What else?"

"That the effects may change when my duties conclude. Which they are about to."

"Okay."

"So I don't know how much of this," James waved a hand at the whole breakfast table, "is you. Or is it a thing the bloodline does. I wake up in the middle of a bed with three men, and I think, maybe I won a prize I didn't earn. And if I'm going to be king..."
