Chapter 4: A Guest's Seat

"Your blood is what you'd expect from a she-wolf in her prime," Edda said.

She sounded angry, and not at me.

"You've been told for years you're a sick woman. Somebody got that wrong, or somebody lied."

"Which?"

"I don't know yet." She wiped her hands on her apron and looked toward the door. "I want to check it against Highmoor's old books before I say a word more. Don't tell anyone, and that includes the King."

I didn't tell anyone for two weeks.

I walked the halls, learned which stairs creaked, and ate everything Edda put down in front of me.

On the last night of the second week Ronan held a dinner for the border Alphas, who had come up to Highmoor early for Moon Court.

He put me at his left hand, in the chair beside his own.

I would have picked a quieter one.

There were thirty at the long table, and the three Alphas sat halfway down it, with their betas, loud and sure of themselves.

The one from the eastern hills was a thick man with a red beard.

He had been looking at me since the soup.

"So this is the famous Luna," he said, pitched so the whole table would hear. "The one Halloway gave away like a coat he'd grown out of."

The talk around us thinned out.

"I'd heard the girl was sickly," said the red beard. "I see he did the King a kindness, trading you off before you died on him."

A few men laughed.
