Chapter 17: Put Anyone
Adeline's POV
Everett stood on my left at the long table, exactly where I had told him to.
Camille sat in the gallery beside Toby, and Toby had promised in the car to behave like a diplomat.
Damon had brought two lawyers.
The Chair read the petition aloud, all nine pages of it, and let the silence after it run on.
"Miss Hartigan," she said. "Did you enter your own name as steward of record on the rail yard deed?"
"Yes."
A gasp went through the gallery, and Damon's lawyer smiled at his notes.
"Did you do so with the knowledge of your Alpha?"
"I did it because he told me to."
"That is a lie," Damon said, rising. "Madam Chair, she has no way to prove it."
"Sit down, Alpha Falk."
He sat.
"Miss Hartigan, go on."
"The lawyers needed a named person to stay on the land through construction," I said. "In June I took it to Alpha Falk. I asked him who he wanted on the line."
I opened the binder.
"He answered by message the same afternoon. I printed it, because I print everything he sends me. I always have."
I handed the page to the clerk.
The clerk read it in his quiet voice.
"Put anyone. You handle it. Sent from the account of D. Falk, the third of June, two forty in the afternoon."
The room went very still.
Damon's lawyer stopped smiling.
"Madam Chair, the message is out of context," the second lawyer said. "He plainly meant a person with authority."
"It says anyone," the Chair said.
