Chapter 19: Full Table

Toby won the debate on Saturday afternoon, and he came home with a plastic trophy and a plan.

"I want a speech at dinner," he announced in the front hall. "It's in the rules."

"Which rules?" I asked.

"Yours. I read them. Rule five says I'm told what everything costs. I want to know what the dinner costs."

"Nothing," Everett said from the stairs.

"Then I accept."

The housekeeper had been cooking since dawn.

Everett had opened the old stable hall behind the house, the long room that held his pack's winter meetings, and she and Ned had pushed every table in the building together.

Thirty of the wolves from Tribeca were there by seven.

The rest were in the guest cottages and the eleven bedrooms, and they would all be at breakfast.

The old man with the cane sat at the head of the middle table and told anyone who stood still about his daughter's work card.

The woman with the toddler had put the child in Everett's lap without asking.

Everett had not moved since.

"He's afraid to breathe," I said to Camille.

"He thinks the baby will file a complaint," Camille said.

She had her own folder open beside her plate, and she hadn't touched her wine.

"I've been on the phone with my father all afternoon," she said. "I think I've found you something."

"Tell me."

"Falk Capital doesn't own those buildings outright. Three banks hold the mortgages." She tapped the folder. "Every lease clause in a building like that needs the lender's consent to call. One of the lenders is Camille's father's bank."
