Chapter 21: Everett's POV

Everett's POV

Damon came to my gate on Thursday night with no driver and no lawyers.

He walked up the drive on foot, in a dark coat, and rang the bell like a stranger.

I let him into the library because I wanted to hear it said under my own roof.

He didn't sit.

"I'll be quick," he said. "Tomorrow the Council votes on my seat. Hers is the deciding vote, and everyone in that room knows it."

"Yes."

"I want her to abstain."

"That's hers to say."

"I know what's hers to say." He took an envelope from inside his coat and put it on the desk. "This is for you. Open it."

I opened it.

It was a signed assignment, three lines long, with Falk Capital's seal.

It gave Lyle Holdings thirty-one percent of Falk Capital's own share of the rail yard, the same figure I had given away, and added two seats on the land committee.

I read it slowly.

"You've priced me," I said.

"I've priced the thing you lost." He didn't smile. "You have the stake and the seats in return for one thing. She abstains."

I laid the paper down.

"You came all the way to Greenwich for this."

"You're a man who says the cost aloud. I'm saying it. That's what you want, isn't it?"

I thought about it honestly, because it deserved that.

A month ago I would have taken the paper and told myself I'd return it to her later.

"No," I said.
