Chapter 4: Clause One

I didn't say a word to Everett until after breakfast.

The housekeeper had made pancakes, and Toby was already on his third.

"These are illegal," he told her. "I want to report them to someone."

"Report them to the Council." She put another one on his plate. "They'll want to know where I hide the butter."

My brother laughed with his mouth full, and I almost forgave the whole house for a minute.

Then I took the folded page out of my pocket and went to find Everett.

He was in the library with a stack of papers, wearing the reading glasses.

He took them off when I came in.

I put the page on his desk and set my finger on the first line.

"Rule one."

"I know."

"You signed it at a quarter to three. At ten past three you filed my brother under your own name."

"Yes."

"Without asking me."

"Yes."

I waited.

He didn't make excuses.

"A ward has to be placed under an Alpha's name before dawn, or the Council's wards office takes him." He laid both hands flat on the desk. "The office opens the transfer at five. Damon's Beta had already pulled Toby's entry at midnight."

"I was on my way."

"You were on your way into a gate where the Beta stood." He kept his voice even. "If you'd lost that argument, your brother would have been in a state car by sunrise. I had two hours and I couldn't reach you, so I made the one move I could."
