Chapter 6: The Corridor

I left the table before the dessert and went to find my coat.

The coat room was down a side corridor, away from the noise.

I had the ticket in my hand when I heard footsteps behind me.

"Addie."

I knew who it was before I turned.

Damon stood at the end of the corridor with his hands in his pockets.

"You made me look like a fool in there."

"You did that yourself."

"Eleven weeks." He came closer. "You stood up in front of the Chair and gave my own date back to me."

"You didn't have it."

He was near enough that I smelled the cedar and the pipe tobacco.

My wolf didn't lean toward him anymore.

"Come home," he said.

"No."

"I'll put Toby back on the list tonight. Your job is yours, at double what you made." He lowered his voice. "Camille is a signature on her father's bank. You know what that is."

"I know exactly what it is," I said. "It's what I was."

He didn't like that.

His hand closed around my wrist.

It wasn't hard, and it wasn't gentle either, and it was the first time in four years he had held me without wanting me in bed.

"Let go," I said.

"You're making a scene again."

"Then let go and I'll stop."

A voice came from the end of the corridor.

"Let her go."

Everett Lyle stood there with my wrap over his arm.
