Chapter 7: The Guest

The housekeeper came down in a robe and put the kettle on without being asked.

Camille sat at the kitchen table with her coat still on and the black binder in her lap.

I sat across from her.

Everett stood in the doorway and kept out of it.

"I'll say it plainly," Camille said. "He sent me."

"Damon."

"He told me to come here and talk you home." She pressed her sleeve to her eyes. "He said you'd listen to another woman."

"What else?"

"I was to bring you back with the signature book." She nudged the binder with one finger. "I took it off the table at the hall because he told me not to let it out of my sight."

"And then?"

"And then I got into the taxi and told the driver Greenwich." She gave a short laugh. "I don't know why I told him that. I couldn't do it."

The kettle clicked off.

The housekeeper set down three mugs and left the room without a word, and I noticed she took Everett with her by the sleeve.

Camille wrapped both hands around the mug.

"He told me it was love," she said. "In London. He said he'd never felt this about anyone."

"When?"

"Eleven days ago."

Eleven days ago, he had called me that same week to say he missed me.

I didn't say so.

"My father owns a bank," Camille said. "A small one, in the City. Damon's fund wants it."

"I know."

"Tonight he told me my father agrees to sell if I marry into Ashgate." Her voice cracked. "He said everyone is better off."

I put my hand flat on the table.

"Four years ago," I said, "he paid for my mother's surgery."
