Chapter 8: The Camp

I had my axe up and the guard's back turned.

Then Min-jun stepped past me into the middle of the yard.

He put his hand on the guard's wrist.

The guard stopped dragging and looked at him.

"You're new," the guard said.

"Let her go."

"Who are you?"

Min-jun straightened his coat.

"Seo Min-jun," he said. "Eighth prince of the shinigami. Son of the king."

The guard looked him up and down.

Then he laughed.

"Eighth prince," he said. "We've heard of you."

He didn't let go of her hair. He held it up like a caught fish.

"Commander!" he shouted.

A door opened at the end of the barracks and a man came out.

He was older, gray at the temples, in a dark coat with the red stitching at the collar.

He walked over slow, looking at Min-jun the way you look at a dog in a market.

"Eighth prince," he said.

"Commander."

"You're a long way from the capital."

"I've come for this woman."

The commander looked at my mother.

"She's a blood source," he said. "She's been one for twenty-one years. She's got a schedule."

"She's coming with me."

"Who says?"

"I say."

The commander looked at the guard.

The guard still had her by the hair.

The commander turned back to Min-jun and hit him across the face.
