Chapter 20: Sandbags

Nico's POV

The Belleville cemetery gate stood open and the chain hung loose from the post.

I left the car on the gravel and walked in without my lights.

The only sound in the dark was iron on stone.

He had gone to the Barzini plot at the back, under the yew, where the baby's small vault sat beside his father's.

He had levered the slab off with a crowbar and laid it on the grass.

Marco knelt in the open grave in his good overcoat, with his sleeves rolled to the elbow.

The little white coffin lay on the earth beside him with the lid up.

It held a folded hospital blanket and two sandbags with the name of a supply company printed on them.

He touched the sandbag with his bare hand, and then the blanket.

"Eleven pounds of sand," he said without turning. "I wondered why a child of twenty-seven weeks needed four men to carry her."

"It was one man."

"It was you."

"Yes."

He sat back on his heels.

He was not a Don in that hole.

He was a man of thirty-nine who had been up all night with a tool in his hands.

"My father said it to me when I was twelve," Marco said. "Nico Alinari is a good dog, and he will never leave that girl. So you keep him close and you give her to him to guard. A man who loves what he cannot have will die at its door."
