Chapter 10: The Rule Ends

The forensic auditor read the preliminary findings standing up, in the same boardroom, to the same five people.

"One. The signatures on the deposit change, the raise acknowledgments and the second-signer card were not written by Ms. Prewitt."

"Two. The notary stamp on every authorization belongs to one notary, who has never met Ms. Prewitt and who is Mr. Dunleavy's cousin."

"Three. The total diverted over six years is one million nine hundred and twelve thousand dollars."

The audit chair took off her glasses.

"As to Ms. Prewitt," she said, "this committee finds that she is the injured party. Her leave ends tonight and her access is restored in the morning."

"As to the audit of her pay, it is closed."

I did not cry in the boardroom.

The finance chief looked at the table and, for the first time all week, did not say a word.

Thane stood beside me through all of it.

When the judge asked if there were questions, he said, "Only one. When can she come back to the Marwick account?"

"Monday," said the judge, and she almost smiled.

That night, at nine, I stood on his doorstep with a bag and a bottle of the cheap red Bernie kept for emergencies.

He opened the door in a grey shirt with the sleeves pushed up.

"It's closed," I said.

"I heard."

"You said not while the audit was open."

He looked at me for a long moment.

"I did say that."

"Then it's a different night."

I stepped past him into the hall and put the bottle down on the table and turned around.

"Before I do anything stupid," I said, "I need to ask you something."

"Ask."

"Are you doing this to protect the company?"

He stared at me.

"You put your name on the audit, you gave me your file, you stood next to me in front of a client," I said. "I keep telling myself it's your job to keep the company clean."

"Nadine."

"I need to hear it."

"I put my name on the audit because it was you," he said. "Not Lanternfield. You."
