Chapter 24: Houston
I read the date twice.
Then I looked at Nicholas.
"Three days after the wedding," I said.
"The Tuesday after Labor Day," the accountant said. "When nobody in this city reads anything."
She slid the page into a folder with the rest and handed it to me.
"Your cousins will be very rich men on September eighth," she said. "For about a week. After that, I'd want a good lawyer if I were them."
Nicholas didn't say anything until we were back on the sidewalk.
The heat was coming up off Montague Street.
"He's selling the building your grandfather put up," he said. "To a company Russell owns, at half price, with the board's own money."
"And when it closes, the patents and the tower both belong to Russell. Everything my family ever made."
"Then it doesn't close."
"How?"
He didn't answer.
He didn't have an answer yet, and he wouldn't pretend.
On Monday morning, July twentieth, his phone rang at seven.
I was asleep in his bed at the townhouse with the windows open.
I heard him say, "Yes. This is Nicholas Santoro."
