Chapter 26: Dark
I said Nicholas's name in the dark.
He was already reaching for his phone on the other side of the bed.
He looked at the four black squares and swung his legs to the floor.
"Call the night guard," he said. "Front step. Don't let him go in alone."
The guard answered on the second ring, wide awake.
"Nobody came past me, Miss Ferraro. I've been on the front steps since ten."
"Stay there. Don't open the garage."
We were on East 78th Street at 3:24.
Nicholas didn't go in through the house.
He walked around to the alley, where the side door of the garage opened onto the bins.
The door was shut.
He put his flashlight on the lock.
There was a small, neat hole where the cylinder used to be. Bright metal shavings lay on the step under it.
"Drilled," he said. "Somebody brought a battery drill and took their time."
He pushed the door open with one knuckle.
The yellow lights came on by themselves.
Both cars sat in their places, exactly as they'd been for two months.
Nicholas went straight to the wall above the side door.
