Chapter 35: The Advisor
On Monday at nine there was an extra chair at the boardroom table.
It was against the wall, by the window, with a glass of water on the sill beside it.
"Two directors asked to hear him," my father said quietly as I sat down. "I said ten minutes."
"Which two?"
He didn't have to answer.
Two of my cousins were looking at their folders.
The third cousin, the one who used to wear the expensive watch, was looking at me.
My father rubbed his chest through his shirt, once, and took his hand away when he saw me notice.
At five past nine the door opened and Bryant came in.
He didn't sit in the chair by the wall.
He stood at the foot of the table with nothing in his hands.
"I'm not here as family," he said. "I gave that up. Give me ten minutes and I'll tell you where your money went this morning."
Nobody spoke.
"Brazos Harbor licenses the separator film to four battery makers," he said. "Two in Nevada, one in Georgia, one in Ohio. Together they pay eleven million dollars a quarter."
One of the cousins started writing.
"The money goes to the Delaware company, then to an account in Houston. The next payment lands on May third. Every cent of it is paying for Russell Hartley's lawyers."
