Chapter 14: The Seal
The cottage went quiet near midnight.
Savannah slept in Hattie's bed with the door open a hand's width, and Hattie sat in the hall chair with a poker across her knees.
I sat at the kitchen table with the lamp my mother had left me.
At sunrise Odessa would stand at the Stone Book and try to strike my name for a fund I never forged.
Savannah's testimony and the sewn envelope were my answer, and tonight I wanted one thing that was only mine before the morning.
Lucan came in from the porch and put a bundle on the wood.
Six envelopes, tied with a bootlace.
The paper had gone soft at the corners from being carried.
"You said tonight," he said.
"I did."
I untied the lace.
The first was dated the autumn after the river.
I read it where I sat, with him standing in front of the stove pretending to look at the kettle.
The first line was: You wore green today and you corrected the clerk's arithmetic and I have never been so happy to be wrong about a border.
I read the second, then the fourth.
The sixth was short.
It said: I am going to stop writing these, because a man who writes six of them and sends none has told himself a story. Tomorrow I will say something to you at the table that is not about grain. I did not. I lost my nerve in the doorway, and I have hated myself since.
I put it down.
"These are bad prose," I said.
"I told you."
"They are bad prose, and I'm going to keep every one."
He turned around then.
His face was open in a way I had only seen in the dark.
"There's something else," he said.
He put his hand inside his coat and took out a thin silver disc on a chain.
It was stamped with the crescent that lay under my hair.
