Chapter 18: The Harvest Supper

The Harvest Supper was held in the Grange hall, under strings of paper lanterns, with every folding table in the county pushed together in rows.

There were pies on the long table and a raffle drum by the stage.

Pru's mother had made forty pounds of mashed potatoes, and the line ran out the door.

Wyatt walked in beside me, and the whole room saw his hand find mine.

Nobody said a word, and a woman by the coffee urn smiled into her cup.

"He's here," Pru said at my shoulder, low. "Table six. The mayor's wife has him next to her, feeding him ham."

I looked.

Dane sat in a clean blue shirt with his hair combed, nodding at the mayor's wife with his sad-honest face.

It was the face he had used on my mother, my friends, and a bank.

"Do you want him out?" Wyatt said.

"No," I said. "I want everyone to hear him first."

I didn't have to wait long.

When the pie was cut, the mayor's wife stood at the microphone and asked if anyone wanted to say what they were thankful for.

Dane was on his feet before she had finished the sentence.

"If I may," he said, and took the microphone from her hand.

"I'm new here. I'm only here because I'm looking for someone I care about."

His voice shook in exactly the right places.

"A year ago I fell in love with a nurse. I trusted her with everything. She took a job out here, and then she took eighteen thousand dollars of my savings and left me to lose my home."

A murmur ran down the tables.

"I'm not asking for revenge. I'm asking her, in front of her new neighbors, to do the right thing. Forty thousand would let me start over. That's all."
