Chapter 22: Half the Closet

Bethany's POV

"Nothing," Wyatt said.

"It is not nothing," said Pru. "Tell her or I will."

I looked from his face to hers.

Wyatt took a breath that went all the way down to his boots.

"The Portland hospital offered me the director's chair," he said. "Three times my salary. A research wing. I turned it down this morning."

"You what?"

"I said no."

"They'd have given me a job there too," I said slowly. "That's what the call was about."

"It was part of it."

"Did you tell them that?"

"I told them no, Bethany. That's all there was to tell."

I set the clipboard down on the bumper of the rig, because my hand wanted to throw it.

"Pru, can you give us the bay?"

Pru held up both palms and backed through the sliding doors without a word.

"You decided," I said.

"Yes."

"You decided what to say to a man who'd offered you everything you were ever scared of not having. And you didn't ask me."

"You'd have told me to take it."

"Maybe I would have!"

"I know," he said. "That's why."

"That is not a reason. That is the whole problem."

My voice bounced back off the hills.

"Five years you carried a card in a drawer, and you decided every day what I could handle hearing. You decided I was better off not knowing how you knew my name. Today you decided again."

"I wanted you to stay out of it."

"I'm not a patient, Wyatt. I'm a person in the middle of this."

He took the hit without flinching, which made it worse.
