Chapter 14: The Defectors
"The last cup," Torren said again, in the dark of the tower.
He lay propped on three pillows, and I sat on the edge of the bed with the mark throbbing under my collar.
"He means the tea," I said.
"He means to do it where the packs can see."
"Then he's a fool."
"He's your father," Torren said. "He believes he's the only man in the room who can pour."
I laughed, though nothing was funny.
He turned his hand over on the blanket, palm up, and I laid mine in it.
Nothing darkened under my nails.
Nothing in him flinched.
We sat like that until the window went grey, and then Cadoc's fist hit the door.
"The ford," he said. "Ashfen wolves are crossing. They have no weapons, and they're carrying doors."
Nine men lay on nine doors at the water's edge, and the wolves who carried them stood knee deep in the Aldwater.
I knew the grey-bearded one at the front.
