Chapter 15: Angry

I did not sleep after Sonya hung up.

I took the folder to the guest room, propped myself against the white bed and read until the river went from black to pewter.

The wire ledger took an hour, because I made myself read every line.

At the back, behind the last tab, there was a clear plastic sleeve I had not noticed before.

It held a single index card, written in a small, upright hand.

Thora Denning. 28. Restores paintings. Mother dead at 17, father failing.

Hands, not money. Kind to the girl at Plus One, who liked her.

Ask her at seven a.m. whether she lies.

The card was dated the Friday of the garage.

I turned it over.

On the back, in the same upright ink, it said: Leave the fifth chair. Let her find the stairs herself.

She will forgive being used sooner than being told what to feel.

I read it twice.

Then I got up in his grey T-shirt and a pair of sleep shorts, and I did not bother with a robe.

The study door stood open and the lamp was on.

Rafferty sat at the desk in sweatpants and a black T-shirt, with a laptop closed in front of him.

He looked up and saw the card in my hand, and he did not ask what it was.

"She knew," I said.

"Yes."

"From the Friday. She knew what you were doing, and she looked me over like a mare, and she asked me if I lied."
