"You said yes," I said.
"I said I'd be honored." The banker folded his glasses. "Rosemary will believe that. She's always thought I was easy to flatter."
"Will you introduce him?"
"No. On the morning I'll call her with a cold, and let her do it herself."
"I'd rather be at a table, where I can stand up."
He walked me to his door.
"Miss Bradbury. Whatever you and Kendrick are planning, plan it well. I'll only stand up once."
I drove back to the motel with the notebook on the passenger seat.
Kendrick was sitting on the end of the bed, dressed, with my pencil note in his good hand.
"Don't sell anything," he read out loud.
"He's paying full value," I said. "And he's on our side. And Leonard is giving a speech in the Glasshouse on the first."
Kendrick put the note down very carefully.
"Then we'll be there," he said.
"We're banned. Both of us."
"From the front door," he said.
On Tuesday, December first, we were on the loading dock at 5:58.
It was dark and bitter, and the floodlights hummed.
