Chapter 14: The Vote Moves Up
My mother called the meeting for ten on a Sunday morning, so no one could say the bank was closed.
The walnut table had been polished.
She sat at the head of it in her camel coat, with her lawyer on her left and Landon on her right.
Landon had slept well.
I could tell from the teeth.
Roberta and I took the two chairs at the foot, and the officer from Lakeshore Trust sat between us with a legal pad.
"Article nine," the lawyer read. "A sale of controlling interest requires seventy-five percent of the shares."
"I hold forty-five," my mother said. "Roberta holds twenty-five. Kasey, thirty."
She looked down the length of the table at the two of us.
"I need five points from either of you," she said. "I would prefer it came from family."
Landon turned his chair toward my cousin with the soft face of a man at a funeral.
"Bobbie," he said. "I was a jerk. I'd like to make it up to you."
"Don't call me Bobbie."
"For the jobs, then."
"I read that power of attorney out loud, Landon," Roberta said. "Twice. I'm much better at saying no out loud."
