Chapter 18: The Floor
I went down alone.
The floor was full, two hundred and twelve people in hoodies and hairnets, standing between the idle presses with their arms crossed.
My grandfather's first sawblade hung above them in the rafters.
I climbed the same pallet where my mother had stood to read a divorce petition, and I took the microphone from the foreman's glove.
"The bank called the loan on Sunday," I said. "Six point eight million, due at noon today."
Nobody breathed.
"At nine twenty-two this morning, it was bought at par, and the new terms are four percent for ten years."
I had to stop, because the noise started at the back and rolled forward.
A man in a sanding apron threw his hat at the ceiling.
Someone began to cry out loud, and several people held her up.
"Your jobs are safe," I said. "The land stays ours."
It took a full minute to quiet them.
"There's one more thing," I said. "It isn't mine to say."
I looked at the ramp.
