Chapter 14: The Cell

Lian held out her wrists.

Zhuo Ming looked at them for a long moment before he closed the iron around them.

He fastened each cuff over the linen on her palms, so the metal wouldn't touch the cuts.

His hands were steady, and his mouth was a flat line.

The cells under the Discipline Hall were cut straight into the cliff.

Hers had a stone shelf, a slop bucket and a door of iron bars.

The only light came from a lamp at the end of the passage.

Someone had already set a bowl of rice and pickled greens inside the bars.

She didn't have to ask who.

Guan Shuo came down the passage the next morning.

He wore a new white robe, and its sleeves hung past his fingertips.

He stopped outside the bars and didn't sit.

"You look terrible," he said.

"I have a rib cracked by a Core strike," Lian said. "You'd know."

He almost smiled, and then he didn't.

"Grandmother will put you on trial before the elders tomorrow," he said.

"The Discipline Elder will ask for the well, and he'll get it. He always does."

"Then why are you here?"

He took hold of the bars with both hands, and his sleeves fell back from his wrists.

The gray under them was as dark as it had been on the stage.
