Chapter 9: Marcy Knows

Nadia's POV

Conference Room B had a whiteboard, an easel, three sandwiches and Marcy.

She stood at the whiteboard in her yellow raincoat with a marker in her hand.

At the top she had written Q3 VENDOR ALIGNMENT in block letters.

Under it, smaller, she had written: HUSBAND, WIFE, WITNESS.

"Sit," Marcy said.

Victor came in behind me with a legal pad under his arm, and shut the door.

"I'd like to say for the record that I didn't tell her," he said.

"He didn't," Marcy said. "I got it from the county email, a duffel bag, and a dollar."

"A dollar?" I said.

"He owes me one. He's on a plan."

I sat down in a chair that rolled and put my face in my hands.

"Here's what I know," Marcy said. "One, you're married. Two, you're married to the nice one."

"Marcy."

"Three, you've told no one, because you're afraid of what Dean will do and what Domenic will do."

"That's accurate," Victor said.

"Four, you've both been lying to me for three days, and I've been very patient about it."

"You have not been patient," I said.

"I've been patient for me."

She pulled a sheet off the easel, and there was our marriage certificate, enlarged to poster size.

A sticky note on the gold seal said OH MY GOD.

The easel stood with its back to the glass wall, so only the three of us could see it.

"Where did you get that?" Victor said.

"The county has a portal. It's very public. It's practically a yearbook."

I laughed, and then I couldn't stop, and then I was just a woman laughing at a poster.

Victor handed me a napkin, and his fingers didn't touch mine.

"We'd like to propose terms," he said to Marcy.

"I've read the terms. Nadia left the napkin on the printer. Terms one and three are fine. Term two is a lie."

"Term two is paper only," I said.

"You were in the same room for four minutes and you've sat as far from each other as the chairs allow. It's a lie."

"It's a rule," Victor said.
