Chapter 23: The Test

I took the notebook from the bedside table and opened it to the last page.

"This is the one I didn't show you," I said.

They had pulled on trousers and shirts and sat around my bed, four big men in a small room, waiting.

I read it aloud.

"Page twenty. The test. Four men, four ways. I will not tell them what I want. I will go quiet, and see who hears it."

Nobody spoke.

"That was the whole game," I said. "The list was real. Everything on it was real. But under it I wanted one thing I couldn't put on a page, because if I wrote it down, it wouldn't count."

"And you're going to tell us now," Léon said.

"No."

Auguste's eyebrows went up.

"I'm going to blindfold you," I said. "All four. You'll each have me, one at a time, for as long as you like. I won't say what I want. You find it, or you don't."

"Elise," Armand said, almost laughing. "That's cruel."

"Yes."

"You are enjoying this."

"Very much."

I tore my pillowcase into four strips.

I tied one over each man's eyes while he sat still.

"Nobody takes it off. Nobody speaks to the others. When I ask, you stop."

I led Auguste first.

He was the easiest to read, I thought. He would try to give me the thing I'd told him I loved.

I lay down on the bed and said nothing.

His hands found my ankles and pulled me to the edge of the mattress.

He slapped me, hard, across the thighs.

He took me roughly, on my back, with my wrists pinned over my head.

He told me I was a filthy little bitch.

It was good, and it was what I had asked for on my first list.

It was not the answer.

I gasped and arched and let him finish, and when he was done I lay still and silent.
