Chapter 6: Tea in the Trailer

Gideon's trailer was parked at the far end of the artist lot, behind a row of silver generators.

Inside it was small and clean, with a dented kettle on the stove and a stack of paperbacks on the table.

He pointed me to the bench seat and put the kettle on without asking what I wanted.

"Ginger or mint," he said. "That's the whole menu."

"Mint."

He set the cup in front of me and sat across the table with his own, and he did not say anything.

I waited for the questions.

I was ready for them. Who is the father, why does your husband think you're unwell, what did the girl do to you.

He asked none of them.

"My sister had twins," he said after a while. "She slept in short pieces for a year. I'm only telling you so you know the next few months will be rough, and also that people survive them."

I laughed, and it came out wet.

"Sorry," I said, and wiped my face with the heel of my hand.

"Don't be." He pushed a napkin across the table. "You don't have to tell me anything."

"I want to."

"Then you can tell me tomorrow, or never. I'm not collecting."

I held the cup in both hands.

The tea was hot and smelled of garden.

"Why did you give me your pass?" I asked.

"Because you were about to be dragged off a field in front of two hundred people for the crime of being his wife." He shrugged. "And because I heard the bridge."
