Chapter 7: One Term

On Saturday morning I came home to the smell of pancakes.

Brandon stood at the stove in his undershirt, flipping them one at a time, the way he did on the first morning of every tour.

The table was set for two, with orange juice and a vase of the yellow tulips I like.

For one moment I stood in the doorway and almost forgave him.

Then I remembered the three missing pages in my notebook.

"You're home," he said, turning with the spatula. "I was afraid you'd stayed away for good."

"I stayed at Margo's."

"Good. She's good for you." He slid a plate toward my chair. "Sit. Please. I made them how you like."

I sat, because I needed to see how far he would take it.

He poured my coffee and added the milk himself.

"I owe you the biggest apology of my life," he said. "The slideshow was wrong. The pass was wrong. I let people push me, and I let it get ugly. I'm sorry, Lydia."

It was a good speech.

It was warm in all the right places, and it did not contain a single fact.

"What did Piper say last night?" I asked.

His hand paused on the pan.

"What do you mean?"

"When you went back to the hotel to see her. You were gone three hours."

"I was talking her down. She's upset about the way you spoke to her on the grass." He did not look up. "She's twenty-four, Lyd. She's not as tough as she acts."

"She cut three pages out of my notebook."
