Chapter 13: Terms

"I need you on Gallows Green," Aveline repeated.

Her voice sounded flat and strange in the round room.

"You've had three years to plan it, and you've had me for three days."

"Three days and four nights," said Torin.

"Don't you dare count."

She stood up from the bed.

Her knees held, which surprised her.

The jug lay in pieces by the wall, and the key sat on the chair where he had left it.

"I'm going to say what I want," she said. "You're going to listen to all of it."

"I'm listening."

"One. No more secrets. Not about me, not about the plan, not about the Queen."

"If you know a thing, I know it within the hour."

"Done."

"Two. You don't decide for me again. Not the gate, not the guards, not which room I sleep in."

His eyes went to the key.

"Done," he said, and it cost him something to say it.

"Three."

She had to stop and breathe.

"Whether I walk up those steps is mine to decide."

"Not yours, not the Queen's, and not hers."

"Not even the woman who made the bargain."

The candle burned between them.

"She is the one who should have the right to ask," Torin said slowly.

"She's dead. I'm the one whose neck is on the block."

He looked at her for a long time.

"That is the term that may cost me my father's kingdom," he said. "Done."
