Chapter 16: The Regent
Two guards twisted Aveline's arms behind her before she could turn.
"Smell the cup!" she shouted. "Someone smell the cup!"
The Queen's lady, who had slipped in behind the guards, was already lifting it off the table.
She carried it out through the door without a glance.
"Hester," said the king.
His voice cracked in the middle of the name.
He pushed himself half upright on the pillows, and the old valet cried out.
The king fixed his eyes on his wife's face.
Whatever he meant to say, it did not come.
His mouth worked once, and a long rattle went out of his chest, and his head sank back.
His hand slid off the blanket.
The room did not make a sound.
Then the Queen threw herself across the bed with a sob that filled the chamber.
"My love! My love, no..."
The physician pressed two fingers to the king's throat.
He stood there a long moment, and then he said, in a flat little voice, "His Majesty has passed."
