Chapter 20: The Axe Held
Torin did not run.
He walked through the crowd with the papers in his fist, and people stepped out of his road one after another.
He passed the Queen's dais without a glance.
He walked through the ring of palace guards, who let him in, and stopped at the foot of the scaffold steps.
Then he knelt.
He went down on both knees on the cobbles of Gallows Green, in front of the whole city, in a laundry boy's smock.
The crowd gasped.
The man in the black hood lowered his axe an inch.
"I knew," said Torin.
He did not shout.
His voice was low and level, and it carried to the back of the square because the square had stopped breathing.
"The Queen is right. I knew where my betrothed's head was meant to fall."
"I knew, because three years ago I put it there."
A sound went across the Green.
"The woman I was promised to found proof that my stepmother was poisoning the king," he said.
"We could not go to the council, because the Chancellor holds the council."
"So the lady Aveline Varrick agreed to play the fool and let them frame her."
